90 not out: Young IPS Manusmriti carries family innings

Patna,(BiharTimes): Manusmriti Prasad and Kamlendra Prasad are the only daughter-father duo to serve as the IPS officer in India. Besides, the 25-year, who studied in Delhi’s St Stephens College and London School of Economics, made a unique history when she on Saturday took part in the IPS officers’ passing out parade in Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy in Hyderabad. The woman officer became the fourth generation of a family serving in police continuously since 1921.

Manusmriti, a Inlaks scholar is originally from Aurangabad district in Bihar. She did her MPhil from a Calcutta institute.

Her great grandfather Harihar Prasad Verma had joined Bihar Police as a constable in 1921. He retired as an assistant sub-inspector in 1954 and passed away in 1956.

Her grandfather, Arvind Prasad, took a step forward as he joined as Sub-Inspector in 1952 and retired as the Assistant Superintendent of Police in 1988 and lives in Patna. His father cracked IPS in 1981 and she repeated the feat in 2009. Thus the family has been serving police service for 90 continuous years, which is a world record.

According to media reports the Vancouver Sun (Canada) had in September last reported that David Stewart joined Vancouver Police on September 23 as the fourth generation member of his family. But he did so 82 years after his great-grandfather Arthur joined the service in 1929.

Manusmriti joined Union Territory cadre. Her father is IPS officer of Uttar Pradesh cadre. He is serving in Delhi as director of the National Institute of Criminology and Forensic Science.

Among those who watched Manusmriti Prasad at the passing-out parade in Hyderabad included her grandfather Arvind Prasad and father Kamlendra Prasad. In fact the whole family was in Hyderabad for this ceremony to see her carry forward the family baton before she joins Delhi Police after completing her training.
