‘Virology research unit in every medical college of country soon’

Patna,(BiharTimes): The Centre would set up at least one virology research unit at every medical college in the country by 2014.
This was stated by the director general of Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and Secretary (Research), Union ministry of health and family welfare, V N Katoch, in Patna on Thursday.


Inaugurating a two-day scientific seminar on kala-azar at the Rajendra Memorial Research Institute of Medical Sciences (RMRI) to celebrate the centenary year of ICMR he said such research units would lead to comprehensive advancement in controlling kala-azar.
Deputy chief minister, Sushil Kumar Modi, who was chief guest on this occasion, conceded that shortage of doctors ails health care system in Bihar. Opening of medical colleges in every district can only change the scenario.
He urged the health minister, Ashwini Kumar Choubey, to initiate a proposal to open medical colleges in every district of the state. This move would take care of shortage of doctors in rural areas. A similar project has been initiated by the Chhattisgarh government. Bihar should also work on the same line, he added.
On this occasion Modi inaugurated a modern laboratory for the diagnosis of TB in the state.
Former Union health minister and MP Dr C P Thakur, himself a kala-azar expert, and health minister Choubey stressed the need of acquiring more technological research capabilities.
Speaking on the occasion the founder of US-based Infectious Disease Research Institute, Steve G Reed said India is the only country in the world which can make significant contribution in eliminating kala-azar. It has the required research capabilities.
RMRI director Pradeep Das said that at the antiretroviral therapy (ART) centre, which would be now made ART+, the aim is to treat over 5,000 patients by next year.
