Noted Diabetologist Dr Ajay Kumar honoured

Patna,(BiharTimes): Dr Ajay Kumar, MD, FRCP, noted physician and diabetologist of Patna has been awarded the prestigious Prof M Vishwanathan Oration by the Research Society for Study of Diabetes in India (RSSDI) for his outstanding contributions to diabetes research in India. He delivered the coveted oration at recently concluded Annual Conference held at Mumbai.

Dr Kumar is the first doctor from Bihar to receive the prestigious Oration .

He has been one of the principal investigators for clinical trials that led to development of three new molecules for treatment of diabetes, including liraglutide, linagliptin and weekly exenatide. It may be noted that liraglutide and linagliptin has been approved for marketing by all regulatory agencies in the world, while weekly exenatide has been approved by the European regulatory agency (EMEA) and is awaiting approval by FDA of USA.

Diabetes Care, the most prestigious international journal of diabetes, is going to publish one of the research works of Dr Ajay Kumar.

The advantage with these new drugs is near freedom from hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) and weight gain which are inherent problems with existing treatment modalities. In fact liraglutide and exenatide have the advantage of causing weight loss which is so very beneficial for obese diabetic patients. He is currently engaged in development of newer insulins and other new molecules for treatment of diabetes.

He has delivered lectures on these new molecules at International Endocrinology Conference held in Tehran, Iran on November 15, 2011 and at SAARC Diabetes Conference held on November 18 last at Dhaka, Bangladesh. He has again been invited to talk on premixed insulins at Dubai International Premix Summit to be held on coming November 24.
