Thief killed in freak accident

New Delhi, Oct 5 (IANS) A 22-year-old thief was killed in a freak accident while trying to flee with money from a donation box at a Durga Puja marquee in north Delhi, police said Wednesday.

The incident was reported around 7 a.m Wednesday when Anil found a deserted Durga Puja marquee in north Delhi's Rohini area and tried to steal the money by breaking one of the donation boxes made of glass.

"While he managed to break the donation box, shards of glass pierced the wrist of his right hand. Anil, whose hand was profusely bleeding, fled with the money but collapsed after running some 400 metres," said a police official.

"We reached the spot and found Anil lying in a pool of blood. He was rushed to a nearby hospital where doctors declared him dead.

"Anil is a native of Bihar who hurt himself while attempting to steal money. Money was also scattered near the broken donation box," Deputy Commissioner of Police B.S. Jaiswal told IANS.
