Many hurt in Muzaffarpur police lathicharge on civil movement

Patna,(BiharTimes): Several people, including six policemen were injured and two vehicles and a fire tender torched following a brutal police lathicharge on the citizens of Muzaffarpur on Friday. They were protesting against the arrest and hospitalisation of social worker Ajay Shankar Sharma on Thursday night. Sharma was on fast near Kanti Thermal Power Plant since October 2 demanding supply of power for the villages in the vicinity of the plant.

According to police irate mob brickbatted the police at different places of the town injuring six policemen.
Local people, however, said that they were demanding the release of Sharma whose fast was going on peacefully.
At least 12 people were arrested in different parts of the town for breach of peace. Local people blocked National Highway-28 and set on fire vehicles. They were demanding immediate release of Sharma, who is the head of a non-political organization and had been on hunger strike in front of the gate of Kanti power plant demanding electricity for villages within five km of its radius.
He was arrested and hospitalised following deterioration in his health. Prohibitory orders have been clamped on the town and additional police force deployed.
Local people said that a few weeks back the Kanti power plant management had signed an agreement with the villagers promising regular supply of power. But that agreement was never fulfilled.

Bihar is facing acute power crisis and even the Kanti plant near Muzaffarpur is unable to supply regular electricity to the nearby villages and localities.

Meanwhile, Muzaffarpur's Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Rajesh Kumar said that strong action will be taken against those responsible for arson and damage to public properties.
The protesters would be identified and imposed a collective penalty.
