Mob attacks, torches police station in Bihar

Patna, Oct 15 (IANS) Angered by the death of a local youth, a mob attacked a police station and set it ablaze in Bihar's Purnea district Saturday, officials said. Six protestors were also injured in police firing.

A large number of people gathered outside Dagarua police station in Purnea, about 350 km from here, when news spread that the body of a local youth, Mohd. Iqbal alias Nasim, was found floating in a pond near the police station.

Protestors alleged police involvement in the death of Iqbal, who was kidnapped two days ago.

The people shouted slogans against police, blocked the national highway and burned tyres. They also pelted stones at police vehicles, following which the security personnel baton charged the protestors to disperse them.

Police said that soon after, a group of protestors attacked the police station and set it on fire.

Purnia Superintendent of Police Amit Lodha told IANS over phone that police personnel were forced to open fire to control the mob, and six people were injured.

He added that nearly half a dozen police officers also were wounded in the clash.
