ASI thrashed, handed over to police for rape bid on widow

Patna,(BiharTimes): An inebriated assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of police, Mahendra Mandal, was badly thrashed by the people and subsequently handed over to police for allegedly trying to rape a widow at Mor Dehri village under Amjhor police station in Aurangabad district.

The 55 year old cop was nabbed by a group of villagers, who beat him up mercilessly and handed him over to police. He was admitted to Aurangabad Sadar hospital.

Reports said that Mandal had barged into the house of the widow in a drunken state at around 11 PM on Friday and allegedly tried to rape her. The victim raised an alarm when the ASI slapped her. On hearing the woman’s cries for help, her neighbours rushed to her house and broke open the door that was locked from inside. They dragged Mandal out and beat him up.

The villagers called up Aurangabad SP, Siddharth Mohan Jain and other police officials to inform them about Mandal’s alleged crime.

Mandal is at present posted at the Devjara outpost of the district. Jain said Mandal has been suspended and sent to jail. A case has been lodged against him at the Amjhor police station.

Mandla, however, refuted the charge of rape and said he was assaulted by the villagers in protest against the recent attack on a woman by some residents. He said he had gone to her house to probe a complaint lodged against her. But the moot question is why he went there at 11:00 PM. Besides, instead of a policeman a policewoman should have gone there.

It needs to be recalled that this is the third time this year that policemen in the state have been named accused for such heinous crime. In the first case a woman was allegedly raped in police custody by some policemen at Majhu police station in Saran district. In another case a woman from Kushinagar, Uttar Pradesh, was allegedly raped by two policemen at a police station in Bagaha district. In both the cases, the accused policemen were suspended and sent to jail.
