Four killed in police-villagers clash in Siwan

Patna,(BiharTimes): Four persons, including an ASI, Manoj Mahto, were killed and 18 others, including 14 policemen and civil officers, were injured when a group of people clashed with the police at Madarpur Bazar in Basantpur block of Siwan district on Wednesday.

Reports from the district said that the clash broke out as policemen tried to rescue a woman from local people who assaulted her accusing her to be a child lifter.


According to the officiating district magistrate Arvind Tiwari the irate locals indulged in heavy brickbatting following which the police personnel resorted to lathicharge to control the situation.


However, reports quoting eyewitnesses said that the incident got out of control when one person was killed by police jeep which was busy in rescuing the woman. The angry mob than set ablaze the jeep forcing the police to open fire.


People were angry with the police after rise in incident of child lifting and kidnapping in the district.
The injured were admitted to a hospital and three policemen were referred to Patna Medical College Hospital. The situation at Madarpur Bazar is tense.
