Five die in Ganges, 21 ghats 'unsafe'

Patna, Oct 27 (IANS) A man and his four grandsons drowned in the Ganges in Patna district Thursday even as 21 bathing ghats were declared unsafe and dangerous for use.
A police officer said the drowning tragedy took place at the Sherpur ghat near Maner in Patna because of a sudden rise in the river's water level. A search was on for the bodies.

Hundreds thronged the spot as news of the deaths spread.

Meanwhile, four days ahead of Chhath festival, authorities have declared 21 'ghats' in Patna district unsafe and dangerous. People have been urged to use only safe ghats for ritual bathing.

There are over 70 ghats along the Ganges in Patna. "But some are in a bad condition," one official said.

During the four-day festival, millions of Hindus pray to the sun god across the state. Devouts throng the river banks early in the morning for bathing.
