Express patna reporter gets Statesman award

Santosh SinghPatna (BiharTimes)The Indian Express’ Patna-based Special Correspondent Santosh Singh received The Statesman Awards for Rural Reporting 2010. The award was given for a story – “Modern Mukhiya” published on 6 June 2010. The story talked about how a Delhi University pass-out left a lucrative job to take up Nayanagar pamchayat mukhiya in Samastipur village.

Sudhanshu Kumar first dropped his surname, engaged 30-0dd dalits in his fields to mitigate caste feelings, especially asking his son to play with dalit children and address lower caste groups elders with respect. He was the first mukhya to dare any one to prove any bribe instance. He used technology to good effect to effect agriculture revolution in area. Sudhanshu now planned to introduce GPS system in his tractors for easy monitoring. He would grow over 50 varieties of fruits.

The presentation Ceremony will be held at Kala Mandir on September 16, 2011 at 6 p.m. Earlier this year, The Indian Express Patna team won Rajasthan Patrika’s KC Kulish Award for Excellence in Print Journalism from Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh in Delhi for an RTI story revealing how 42 people were harassed in Bihar for seeking information under the otherwise landmark Act.
