Bihar to levy tax on water

Patna,(BiharTimes): Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) minister Chandra Mohan Rai said on Wednesday that the state government is considering a proposal to levy water tax on users.
According to him this will help check the gross misuse of water.

However, Dalits, Mahadalits and slum dwellers would be exempted from paying water tax.

He said that in the proposed Drinking Water and Sanitation Policy of the state government, there is a provision for financial sustainability of the safe drinking water supply projects.

However, a sizeable section of activists who work on water related issues are strongly opposing the government move to levy tax.

Even those who are supporting the move wanted it to be levied only in urban areas, not in rural areas. Besides, they want high tax on water used for industrial purposes.
