Notice to Bihar government on child rights violations

New Delhi, Sep 5 (IANS) The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Monday issued notice to the Bihar government for alleged human rights violation of children who were made to wash dishes and serve food to politicians at a function.

According to a statement by the NHRC, the commission has taken suo motu cognisance of media reports and a complaint which alleged that minor children, aged eight to 12 years, were made to work at an event organised by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in which the labour minister of the state was also present.

"It is alleged that the children were paid a meager amount of Rs.150 per day for providing their services at such functions. The commission issued notice to the chief secretary of Bihar, calling for a report in the matter within four weeks time," the statement said.
