Nitish opposes Bill on communal violence, Lalu supports

Patna,(BiharTimes): While RJD chief Lalu Yadav whole-heartedly supported the Bill for the prevention of communal violence, Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar toed the line of the BJP, Trinamool Congress, Bahujan Samaj Party etc in opposing it.

The chief minister, who along with Mamata Banerjee, Mayawati, Jayalalithaa etc did not attend the meeting of the National Integration Council in New Delhi on Saturday, instead sent the water resources minister, Vijay Chaudhary to represent the state.
Reading his speech Chaudhary said that “because of the provisions of the Bill, an impression may be created among people that the majority community is always responsible for communal incidents. This opinion may cause sharp reactions among the majority community and ultimately go against the minorities.”
The speech said that promulgation of Article 355 of the Constitution in a limited area during internal disturbances was not at all desirable as it would lead to unnecessary interference in the jurisdiction of the state. He said if a state government was found to be incapable of carrying out its duties, necessary action could be taken under the existing constitutional provisions.
Seeking a thorough discussion with the state governments over its draft Nitish objected to the notion in the Bill that states falter in taking administrative decisions and the Centre had the role to set it right. He mentioned that communal and caste violence has been brought under full control in Bihar during the last six years.
Bihar chief minister said that it was necessary to provide equal and better opportunities to the minorities through educational, economic and social uplift.
