Nitish had pleaded to make Gopa VC of NIU

Patna,(BiharTimes): Though Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar is repeatedly trying to wash his hands of from the controversial appointment of Gopa Sabharwal as the Vice Chancellor of the Nalanda International University (NIU) the truth is that he was one who met the External Affairs Minister, S M Krishna, on May 18 to plead for her appointment as the full-fledged VC.

In New Delhi he then brought to the attention of Krishna the fact that the Vice Chancellor of Nalanda International University has still not been formally appointed.

“This is a source of embarrassment as whenever Gopa Sabharwal has to correspond with outside agencies, she has to call herself as VC-designate,” Nitish was quoted in the May 19 edition of the Times of India.

The chief minister further told Krishna that some space had been made available to the University for use as an office at Rajgir. The building could be used till such time as the university campus came up. The building needed some repairs and refurbishing which could be arranged by the university after funds for the same are made available by the Centre, he then said.

Nitish’s May 18 meeting with Krishna made it clear that he was also the one who openly advocated for making Gopa, a Reader in Lady Shri Ram College, as the VC. Though it is other thing that now he is blaming the Centre for it and not taking any credit for NIU either.
