Few takers for CUB courses this year

Patna,(BiharTimes): May be because of prolong controversy over its location, delay in session of universities of Bihar or lack of interest of students towards humanities and social sciences several new courses of the Central University of Bihar (CUB) have found few or absolutely no takers.

According to its registrar Mohammad Nehal nobody took admission to MA in Hindi and Political Science and International Relations, leaving all the 20 seats in each course vacant. Only five students have enrolled for MA in Economics, three for MA in English and just one in Sociology. All these courses have 20 seats each.

CUB launched seven new courses––Life Science, Economics, English, Hindi, Political Science and International Relations, Sociology and MTech in Computer Science––in the new session of 2012, which is to start on August 21.
In contrast all the 15 seats of MTech in Computer Science have been filled up. However, of the 20 seats in Mathematics, seven are vacant.
However, the CUB registrar tries to downplay the problem by stating that students appear uninterested in humanities and social science subjects and that the low turnout is not confined to CUB only. This is a trend in almost every institution of the country.
He also attributed the poor response to delayed session of the state-run universities. CUB’s admission process starts in March. By the time the state universities declare the final-year graduation examination results, the admission process in the CUB gets over. The admission process in the CUB usually starts in the first week of April. The last date for submitting applications forms is in April end.
The entrance examination is conducted in mid-June and students have to take admission by mid-July.
He said that in the state universities, the graduation final year examination starts in mid-March and continues till May. The results are declared in June-end, making it virtually impossible for the Bihar students to apply for admission to the CUB.
It is true the demand for humanities and social sciences has declined. Even in Patna University’s colleges 50 per cent seats in Hindi are vacant. The condition of other language courses is even worse. But then the state universities still get more students than CUB.
This is because the CUB holds the Central Universities’ Common Entrance Test (CUCET) before admitting students. Most of the social science and humanities students are not prepared for this. The CUCET test comprises two papers.
The first paper carries 35 per cent marks and consists of questions from general studies, general awareness, general aptitude and analytical ability. The second paper carrying 65 marks is subject-specific. It is also objective in nature.
At present, CUB offers 16 courses. Of them, 16 are MA/MSc programmes. It also offers MTech in computer science.
New plan
The CUB is planning to start MPhil and PhD programmes. The CUB academic council has approved them. With picture getting clear and controversy over the location decided more students may apply for admission in CUB from next year.
