Ram Vilas writes to PM, seeks CBI probe into uterus scam

Patna,(BiharTimes): Lok Janshakti Party chief Ram Vilas Paswan has sought a CBI probe into what is now called the uterus scam in Bihar.
In a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh he termed the alleged cases of premature termination of pregnancies, hysterectomies and removal of the uterus of thousands of women at private hospitals in Bihar as horrifying. These medical malpractices had caused incalculable physical and mental damage to thousands of young women, of which more than 40 per cent were unmarried.

Paswan alleged that gangs of criminals in the guise of doctors have not only imperilled the lives of thousands of women by conducting these illegal and dangerous surgeries of premature termination of pregnancies, hysterectomies and removal of the uterus, but have, in collusion with unscrupulous government officials, pocketed the money meant for medical treatment of these very poor people.

He held the ‘insensitive’ Nitish government responsible for what he called heinous crime against humanity committed in the notified hospitals.

The LJP president said the state government had on the floor of the Assembly admitted that a total of 16,765 premature termination of pregnancies, hysterectomies and removal of the uterus had been reported between 2010-11 and June 2011-12 have been reported.

It needs to be recalled that the issue rocked the Bihar Assembly during the last Monsoon Session. This resulted in adjournment of proceedings for two days and was also raised by Moti Lal Vohra in the Rajya Sabha. The latter also demanding a CBI inquiry.
