Sexually harassed girl commits suicide in Bihar’s Sitamarhi district

Patna,(BiharTimes): Kanchan Bala Jha, a graudate student of Sitamarhi committed suicide on Thursday after her repeated pleas to the police about harassment fell on deaf ears. Incidentally, her father himself is a BMP Havildar.

According to a late report she hanged herself from the ceiling of her rented house in Krishnangar locality of the town only a day after chief minister Nitish Kumar called upon the police top brass to tone up the law and order situation in the state.

The suicide note squarely blamed the police for its failure to protect her from her blackmailers. She was a BSc (Honours) student of local SRK Goenka College.

The harassment started in June last year when Puja, one of the acquaintances, reportedly took Kanchan Bala to her residence on the last day of their Part-II examination.

One Birendra Sah, said to be an employee in the Sitamarhi collectorate, was along with, one Lovely, waiting for them in a room where Kanchan Bala was forced to pose with Birendra in different positions and filmed.

Kanchan Bala’s father Uday Kant Jha, who is a Havildar in BMP-5 at Sultanganj, said his daughter along with her brother went to the Dumra police station to complain about the confinement and photography. But the policemen advised them to reach a compromise. Birendra gave it in writing that he would never harass the girl.

On July 10 this year, however, Birendra allegedly abducted Kanchan Bala’s brother Manish on his motorcycle, thrashed him and later released him. Before Manish could lodge a complaint, Birendra rushed to the Dumra police station and lodged a complaint, alleging Manish misbehaved with him.

Reports from Sitamarhi said that when Manish and Kanchan Bala went to the police station, they were made to wait for three hours. Uday Kant told mediapersons that while Manish wanted to lodge a complaint about his abduction and threat to the life and modesty of his sister, police registered a case under bailable Sections.

On July 12 the girl met the SP. On his order, Birendra was arrested but was released on bail at the police station itself.

The parents alleged that Birendra’s threats continued. The girl again approached the SP on August 19. Having failed in getting justice she finally committed suicide on August 23.

Ironically, the police arrested Birendra a day later. But he was shifted to the sadar hospital. It was only when media highlighted the news on Saturday that he was sent to jail.

Puja and Lovely have also been arrested. SP Vivek Kumar said Dumra police station SHO Ramanand Prasad had been suspended.
