Rohtas Police seizes opium crops worth crores

Patna,(BiharTimes): Rohtas Police on Saturday seized standing opium crops worth crores on a 10-acre plot in far-flung Hasadi, said to be a Maoist-affected village near Jharkhand border, under the Nauhatta Police Station area in the Kaimur Hills in Rohtas district.

According to SP Manu Maharaj the seized crops would be destroyed after getting permission from the court. He said Police also arrested a Maoist and recovered three cane bombs meant for ambushing police vehicles from him in Taradih village of the Hills. He was involved in several extremists’ operations.

Reports said that Police spotted the opium crops during a combing operation.

Opium cultivation has been going on in many Rohtas villages since long. Several efforts were made in the past to wipe out those involved in the racket but with little success. The advent of Maoists helped revive this illegal business. Not only that now opium is secretly grown in some villages of Sherghatty sub-division of Gaya district. These villages are also under the influence of the Maoists.

Hasadi villagers revealed the opium farming had been going on for long. It was after a gap of 18 years that police entered the village on Saturday.
