International Rice Research Institute team visits Nalanda village to study SRI methods

Patna,(BiharTimes): A 12-member team of scientists, most of them associated with the Manila-based International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), visited various villages of Harnaut block of Nalanda district and examined the standing crop of wheat which is being grown using system of root intensification (SRI) methods and talked to the farmers. Four farmers of Nalanda district recently created world record in rice production by adopting the SRI methods.

The visit followed similar trips undertaken by several national and international teams of agriculture scientists and officials to the district in the last few months.

The team also studied the use of traditional bio-fertilizers and expressed happiness over the innovative techniques used by the farmers of the district.

However, it could not visit Darveshpura village, where Sumant Kumar, a farmer, had achieved 224 quintal per hectare paddy yield, the highest in the world, last year.

Team leader Stephen Hefle said that SRI technique was developed in Madagascar, but it is Nalanda which has shown to the world its use.

The members of the team included Michel Potes (New Zealand), Jessica Silver (USA), Tom Remington, Brian Luv, and Dr Sudhanshu of IRRI, Manila. Dr Manzoor Dar from Indian Agriculture Research Institute accompanied the visiting team.
