20 long distance trains cancelled as RRI developed snag

Patna,(BiharTimes): Twenty long distance trains were cancelled under the Danapur division of East Central Railway (ECR) on Wednesday due to technical snag in the route relay interlocking (RRI) system at Patna Junction. The condition on Thursday hardly improved with several Express trains on way to Patna Junction waiting for green signal at various stations. As if that is not enough a Patna-Gaya EMU developed technical fault near Bela railway station on Thursday further compounding the problem on this route.

The long distance trains cancelled on Wednesday included Patna-Howrah Garib Rath, Danapur-Howrah Express, Saharsa-Patna Kosi Express, Bhagalpur-Danapur Intercity, Islampur-Rajendra Nagar Express, Rajgir-Danapur Intercity, Banka-Rajendra Nagar Express, Sahebganj-Danapur Intercity, Ranchi-Patna Janshatabdi, Sealdah-Amritsar Express, and Jayanagar-Danapur Intercity.

Several other long distance trains are running very late causing immense hardship to the passengers. For example the down North-East Express arrived about 18 hours late on Wednesday evening.

According to Chief Public Relation Officer of East Central Railway Neeraj Ambastha, though efforts are on to streamline traffic movement after rectifying faults in the RRI system, most of the long-distance mail and express trains were scheduled to originate from Danapur station on Wednesday.

However, a few East-bound passenger trains originated from Rajendra Nagar, Gulzarbagh, Patna Saheb and Mokama stations on Wednesday for the convenience of passengers. Several trains which originated from Kolkata and Howrah were diverted to Dhanbad-Gaya-Mughalsarai Grand Chord (GC) route.

Sources said that the fault in the RRI system on the Up line at Patna Junction was partially rectified on Wednesday morning. Railways would rectify other major faults in the new system in a day or two.

The RRI work, which started on Feb 7 was supposed to be completed by Feb 12, but due to technical snag it may continue to trouble the passengers for a couple of more days. Both the long distance travellers and daily commuters were a harried lot following cancellation of trains.

Several passengers had to spent night on platforms of Patna Junction due to late running of trains.
In the past 10 days, more than 70 trains have been cancelled and 100 diverted. Railway authorities conceded that problems in the RRI work were the cause of the all the trouble.
