Jharkhand to get airport at Deoghar

Ranchi, Feb 16 (IANS) The Jharkhand government and Airports Authority of India (AAI) Thursday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to develop an airport at Deoghar district to promote religious tourism in the state.

The MoU was signed by V.P. Agrawal, chairman AAI, and V.K. Singh, secretary civil aviationof the Jharkhand government, in presence of Chief Minister Arjun Munda in Ranchi.

According to a government official, the airport will be developed for landing of ATR 72 aircraft. The first phase will be completed in two years. The cost of the total project is Rs.350 crore.

Deoghar is an important religious place of Jharkhand. The Shiva temple of Bababaidhyanath of Deoghar witnesses around five million religious tourists every year. It is also close to the Parasnath hill of Giridih district, which is a place of 23 Jain tirthankars.

Speaking on the occasion, Munda said: "The airport will help the state in promoting religious tourism in the Deoghar region. We are dedicated to provide better roads, railway and air connectivity in the state to promote business in every sectors."
