Patna College Principal accused of attacking students, campus violence

Patna,(BiharTimes): The Principal of Patna College, Lal Keshwar Prasad Singh, is again in the news for all the wrong reasons. A senior Professor of Patna University has accused him of masterminding the attack on the activists of All India Students’ Association on Saturday. Only a day earlier the same Principal strongly protested and yelled against the Press Council of India Chairman, Justice Markandey Katju, while he was addressing a seminar at the Wheeler Senate Hall.

Lal Keshwar was taken outside the venue by some of those present on the occasion as a large number of audience were in full agreement with Katju, who was speaking on the Press censorship in Bihar. On Saturday when the Patna University Senate was holding its meeting the AISA organized a parallel meeting to press their demands, which includes the students union election.

It was here that some students, alleged to be associated with the Chhatra Janata Dal (United) attacked them. Earlier in the day the Chhatra Janata Dal (United) activists also protested against Katju’s remarks given a day earlier. The attackers also ransacked the University property while the police looked the other way round. They did not spare even the girls present in the AISA meeting and attacked them. AISA might have been targeted because its activists fully supported Katju’s comments. On Sunday the AISA took out a rally against the attack on its peaceful meeting. It charged the inmates of Patna College’s Jackson Hostel for the attack. Not only that Professor of Economics, Patna University (PU), Nawal Kishore Chaudhary, accused the college Principal of plotting the attack on AISA. Chaudhary charged Lal Keshwar Singh with instigating students to indulge in unlawful activities.

He said AISA members were holding a parallel students’ Senate meeting on the college campus where he too addressed them. Around 1.30 PM, inmates of Jackson Hostel reached the spot and started attacking the AISA members. He further said that, according to information acquired by AISA members, the hostel boarders were told to attack them by Lalkeshwar Singh.

He also demanded a probe into the incident and the suspension of the Principal, who incidentally is the husband of Janata Dal (United) MLA, Usha Singh. However, Lal Keshwar denied the allegation stating that if Prof Chaudhary has any evidence, he should produce that to prove that the attack was carried out at his behest. He said that on Saturday he was attending the Senate meeting at Wheeler Senate Hall from 10:00 AM till the evening. Prof Chaudhary’s statement has an ulterior motive to defame him, the Principal alleged. While Prof Chaudhary dared to come out openly there is no dearth of teachers of Patna University who openly blame the state government and the Principal for the present chaos and lawlessness on the campus. That the historic Wheeler Senate Hall would witness protest and violence for two consecutive days speak of the gravity of the situation in Patna University.
