According to police, Bhattacharjee, who holds a master's degree in physics and was going to Delhi for a PhD enrolment exam, has been traceless after he gave chase to the four youths who had snatched his bag that contained his original certificates and other documents, when the train had stopped at Naugachia station.

Bhattacharjee, a native of Silchar, reportedly told his mother over telephone that he was being "tormented" by four youths who were travelling with him on the Awadh-Assam Express after it crossed Katihar in Bihar.

Soon after his mobile phone was switched off, Bhattacharjee's uncle Ram Mohan Bhattacharjee, who visited Naugachia to trace him, informed local police.
