Gangrape case: Main accused surrenders as women stage sit-in

Patna,(BiharTimes): Though the main accused in the teenaged girl gangrape case, Prashant Jha, surrendered in Shimla (Himachal Pradesh) on Thursday a large number of people, mostly women, sat on a day-long dharna near Kargil Chowk to protest the heinous crime and alleged attempt to shield the culprits.

Women groups under the banner of Mahila Atyachor Virodhi Sangharsh Morcha organized the sit-in.

Speaking to BiharTimes the leading light of the Morcha, Kanchan Bala, accused the state government machinery of suppressing the fact for full one and a half months.

She asked as to why the then Patna SP Kim was transferred out of Patna the day a meeting was held at the Shashtrinagar Police Station to discuss the incident. She said that after Kim was provided the CD she had visited the school where the boy studied.

Kanchan Bala asked the people wanted to know whether Kim’s transfer came as a punishment.

She questioned if a senior officer like City SP had already carried out an investigation, why a junior officer, DSP Law and Order, had been handed over the investigation. These questions raise doubts about the government’s intention.

On the other hand Manju Dundung of Ekta Parishad said that some persons are directly involved in the incident whereas many others indirectly. They all should be arrested. It should be probed how innocent girls are being trapped to make MMS. She said that even school administration should be questioned.

However, reports now said that the then SP Kim had the CD with her and was believed to have been forced by high ups to drop the case for next four days nothing happened. Her sudden transfer at this point certainly raises questions.

While, a member of the Bihar Women’s Commission, Chandramukhi Devi––although after much delay––showed some interest in the case its chairperson, Kahkashan Parween, has maintained low profile and had not said anything on the issue.
