Nitish vows to come down heavily on mining mafia

Patna,(BiharTimes): Weeks after the police raids on those engaged in the illegal mining in the state, including former state BJP chief, Gopal Narayan Singh, chief minister Nitish Kumar on Thursday said in the state Assembly that his government would not allow illegal mining activities in the state and none involving in it would get political patronage.

Intervening in the discussion Nitish urged Speaker Uday Narayan Chaudhary to allow debate on the issue in the Assembly.
The Speaker, who had earlier rejected RJD MLA Samrat Chaudhary’s Adjournment Motion on illegal mining activities on the ground that it was not proper under the rules of procedure of the House, later said the issue would be discussed for two hours at a later date under Rule 43 of the Rules of Procedure.

Leader of Opposition Abdul Bari Siddique earlier asked the Speaker to allow debate on the issue under Adjournment Motion saying it was a matter of public interest as Rohtas SP was attacked by mining mafias and another IPS officer was killed by them in Madhya Pradesh recently.

Welcoming the desire of the opposition legislators to discuss the illegal mining activities in Bihar, the chief minister said the state government needs cooperation of everybody to confront the mining mafias and protect natural resources. He said at the instruction of the state government, local officials have put their life on risk to carry out raids against such elements.

Ironically several BJP leaders are involved in illegal mining business all over the country, be it in Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Bihar or Jharkhand. They have links with some top leaders of the party.

It is not for nothing that the same Gopal Narayan Singh has emerged as a strong candidate for the Rajya Sabha ticket of the party this time. The police had only recently recovered a large amount of explosives too from his business premises.

The chief minister tough stand on the issue of illegal mining has come as a surprise to many both within the BJP and Janata Dal (United). Many has now started asking whether he would succeed in his mission or not as the mafias are too strong politically.
