Bihar to brighten up in next five years: Minister

Patna,(BiharTimes): While Bihar is at present facing serious power shortage the state electricity minister, Vijendra Prasad Yadav, said that it would become a power surplus state by 2016-17.

He told the State Assembly on Friday that by that time all the power projects with a capacity  to generate 8,200 MW would be completed. He said by 2015-16 the power projects at Dagmara, Farakka, Katwa and Talcher (Stage-2) would start production, which would be in addition to the present central quota of power to Bihar.
Apart from that he told the Assembly that the state government had signed an agreement with private power companies for purchase of 1000 MW to meet domestic demands. The Bihar State Electricity Board  had been given Rs 3400 crores to purchase power from private sources.

He admitted that the state had been reeling under power crisis for the past several years.

However, he regretted that since 1977 not a single power plant was set up in the state and charged the Centre with supplying only 800 to 900 MW of power out of Bihar’s quota of 1772 MW from the central pool.
Power sub-station would be set up at block level for the rural electrification. An agreement had been signed with the Power Grid Corporation to strengthen transmission infrastructure to provide power to the farmers for irrigation.

Vijendra Yadav said that a Detailed Project Report had been sent to the Centre for laying 63KV and 100 KV transformers in the villages of 20 districts under the Rajiv Gandhi Grameen Vidyutikaran Yojana.
