Patna,(BiharTimes): Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi on Wednesday ruled out any cut in the Value Added Tax (VAT) on petrol. Talking to the media outside the state Assembly he said the Bihar government is unable to follow Goa, which slashed the petrol prices by Rs 11 a litre by bringing down the value added tax (VAT) that goes to the state exchequer. | He said that Goa is a small state and rich in mineral base and natural resources. In contrast the Bihar government cannot slash the Value Added Tax on petrol as it cannot afford it. Modi, who also holds finance portfolio, said if any arrangement has to be made it has to be made by the Centre. Interestingly, the Union Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Rajiv Shukla on Tuesday welcomed the BJP government’s proposal in Goa to reduce petrol prices by Rs 11 and said the other states, especially the BJP ruled ones, should emulate the step to ease the burden on the common man. Shukla said as far as petrol and diesel are concerned, states get more tax than the Centre from petroleum products. They impose more tax and get more. If states abolish taxes, then it will ease the burden on the common man. He said central government had already reduced the custom duty. The share of the state government is far bigger as far as money generated from petroleum products is concerned.    comments... |
