Rise in malnourishment level among women in Bihar in recent years

Patna,(BiharTimes): Though Bihar is credited for empowering women at the grassroots level of democracy the number of women in workforce is among the lowest in the country. Not only that, according to the National Family Health Survey (NFHS), malnourishment among women has increased from 39 per cent in NFHS 2 to 43 per cent in NFHS 3.

If the national average of women in workforce in rural areas is 26.1 per cent in Bihar, it is only 6.5 per cent.

  In the urban areaas the situation is even worse. While national average of the female workforce is 13.8, only 4.7 per cent of the workforce are women in the state.

Though education among upper castes is much higher women belonging to this section have the lowest labour force participation rate. It is 28.8 per cent. In contrast 84.6 per cent women from the scheduled castes form workforce.  Overall, 71.5 per cent of the women report domestic work as their primary activity. At the same time, women’s employment is concentrated in the agricultural sector.
