Police lathicharge on people wanting to see President

Patna,(BiharTimes): The Darbhanga Police had to resort to lathicharge on Wednesday to disperse the overzealous crowd, which wanted to see President Pranab Mukherjee, who was in the city for the convocation of Lalit Narayan Mithila University (LNMU).

The local residents gathered near the convocation venue at Nagendra Jha Stadium as they wanted to have a glimpse of the President. The crowd became restive after they were prevented from coming closer. This sparked off a clash with the police.

Several police vehicles were damaged as mob pelted stones at them.

Local residents complained that even when Dr A P J Abdul Kalam came in 2005 they were not allowed to see him.

Speaking at the convocation ceremony, Pranab Mukherjee called for carefully drafted curriculum and importance to autonomous research by universities to face the competitive international environment in higher education.
