Nitish defends police restraint againt rampaging Ranvir Sena supporters

Patna,(BiharTimes): Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Monday said had the police taken action against thousands of rioters who took to streets in Patna on June 2 after the killing of Ranvir Sena chief, Brahmeshwar Singh Mukhiya, the consequences could have been disastrous.

Talking to newsmen on Monday he defended the Director General of Police Abhayanand for justifying videography of the riots perpetrated by the supporters of Brahmeshwar Singh on the streets instead of taking action against the rioters.

The chief minister said the restraint shown by the Patna police at the behest of the DGP was fully justified in view of sensitivity and gravity of the situation.

Nitish, who was then undertaking Sewa Yatra in Bhagalpur, said that he was himself monitoring the situation and had directed the DGP to exercise restraint while dealing with it.

While making a presentation at the annual conference of top police officials in New Delhi on Sunday Abhayanand had justified videography of rioting and registration of cases against the rioters instead of taking action against such elements as a tool of policing.

Nitish said that he was aware of what the DGP had said at the conference. The DGP had also briefed him about the presentation of professional policing. There was nothing wrong in the views, he added.
