SC orders demolition of 336 houses in Bhagwat Nagar in Patna

Patna,(BiharTimes): The Suprme Court has ordered demolition of 336 houses of Bhagwat Nagar and clear the encroached area.

The PMC officials have pasted notices and have marked 336 houses for demolition in the first phase.

Adarsh Bhagwat Jai Prakash Nagar Sangharsh Morcha president, Saroj Kant Tripathy, said “we have faxed a letter expressing our wish to meet President Pranab Mukherjee, who is scheduled to arrive in the state capital on Oct 3.”

He said that the area would be sealed at all points to prevent demolition.

The issue had come to light when a PIL was filed in the Patna high court. Later in 2005 the case was moved to SC. There are 6,000 houses in the locality, which has population of around 20,000.

In the first phase the court has asked the PMC Commissioner to demolish 336 of them. They have been asked to report about it on Sep 26.

On Sep 7, 2011 the local people resisted the PMC’s bid to demolish the houses though it took the help of police in this regard. The local residents said that they purchased the houses from farmers and even paid taxes to PMC. So the PMC has no right to evict them.
