Union Minister expresses concern over rapid rise in atrocities against Dalits in Bihar

Patna,(BiharTimes): The Union Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Mukul Wasnik on Wednesday strongly disapproved the creation of separate group, Mahadalits, from within Dalit community by the Nitish Kumar government.

Talking to reporters in Patna he said there is no such division of Dalits and Mahadalits in the Central list.

He expressed grave concern at the rise in atrocities against the Schedule Castes and Schedule Tribes in Bihar.

He said as per National Crime Record Bureau about 3,800 such cases were reported in 2011 alone.

The Union Minister said that he was informed that the state government has identified 32 out of 38 districts as atrocity prone.

Wasnik suggested that the state government request courts to take up pending cases of atrocities and injustice against the SC and ST as there was growth in such incidents in certain districts due to delay in disposal of such cases. The Centre would provide assistance, if required, for setting up special courts for trial of such cases, the Union Minister added.
