Mathematician Vashishtha Narayan Singh joins B N Mandal University as Visiting Professor

 

Patna,(BiharTimes): Renowned mathematician of Bihar, Vashishtha Narayan Singh, is back on the campus. 

On Wednesday he joined the Bhupendra Narayan Mandal University (BNMU) in Madhepura as a Visiting Professor after its Academic Council approved his appointment following media reports, about how he was leading a very poor life in his village home at Basantpur in Bhojpur district of the state.

The 67-year-old Singh was accompanied to the University by his brother Ayodhya Singh and nephew Nitiesh Kumar Singh.

Singh is a PhD from the University of California, Berkeley and did his schooling from Netarhat.

Disclosing the news to the media on Thursday the VC, Anant Kumar, said it was a day of pride for BNMU as Singh accepted the university’s offer. He hoped that the health of Math wizard would improve fast as a result of his association with academia again. 

He was in the United States from 1965 to 1974 and worked on space theory at National Aeronautic and Space Administration (NASA) before returning to India, where he got married in 1974.

However, his wife deserted him after he suffered his first attack of schizophrenia in 1976. 

He had taught at IIT Kanpur, the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (Mumbai) and the Indian Statistical Institute (Kolkata).

While talking to the teachers and officials of the B N Mandal University, Singh reportedly said he was fond of teaching functional mathematics.
