Bihar fifth in country in receiving remittance through post offices

 


Patna,(BiharTimes): Bihar is ranked fifth in the country so far receiving foreign remittances through post  offices are concerned. It received a total of over Rs 200 crore in the financial year 2012-13.

According to Anil Kumar, Director, Business Development, Bihar Postal Services Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Uttar Pradesh are ahead of Bihar in terms of remittance sent by Indians to their home through Western Union money transfer with assistance from post offices.

He said that like other states, remittances to Bihar also came mostly from the Gulf countries and a major share of the remittance was sent to post offices in Siwan, Bhojpur, Muzzafarpur, Gopalganj and Patna. They are referred to as “money order districts.”

More than one lakh people sent remittance through the Western Union money transfer in Bihar, he told PTI recently.

Of 9,614 post offices in the State, 225 have money transfer facilities, he added.

Across the country there are 1.55 lakh post offices, of which 1.20 lakh have money transfer facility.
The official said the department has started mobile money transfer (MMT) in rural areas of the State to make the transfer of money even easier.

This service was launched in 118 post offices in rural areas of Bihar, he added.
