Medical students fleeing state because of state government’s approach

Patna,(BiharTimes): Yet another example of lackadaisical approach of the state government machinery has come to light.

The delay in conducting counselling sessions for admission to MBBS courses in the state government medical colleges is proving dear to the meritorious students of Bihar, who scored very well in the recently held National Entrance Eligibility Test (NEET). They have been forced to take entry in colleges outside the state––some of them even in private colleges.

The counselling sessions in Bihar are to begin from August 17 and classes are likely to start from September when in other states they have already started.

The 85 per cent state quota offers students of Bihar better chances over outsiders of getting admission in the medical colleges in the state. But due to delay in counselling students are leaving Bihar for other states.

What is ironical is that this has happened when the state government is repeatedly seeking Medical Council of India’s permission to increase seats for medical colleges of the state.

Students who ranked very well are taking admission in medical colleges of other states on the basis of the 15 per cent all-India quota. In a couple of cases even poor students have been forced to pay heavy amount to get admitted in private colleges elsewhere. Otherwise these students would certainly have preferred home state.

Students in medical colleges prefer home state because in hospital duty after second year they do not face problem with patients in communicating. In several other states they face this problem and had to learn local language too.

According to the norms counselling for admission to MBBS courses in government medical colleges should be completed before August so that classes can begin from August.

At present Bihar has no separate health minister with portfolio in the hands of the chief minister after the sacking of Ashwani Choubey, along with all the 11 BJP ministers on June 16.

Reports said the Bihar Combined Entrance Competitive Examination Board had already received the NEET results a month-and-a-half ago yet the department failed to act on time.
