MIT to expel students involved in molesting girls

Patna,(BiharTimes): The Muzaffarpur Institute of Technology (MIT) has decided to expel six students involved in alleged outraging of modesty of girl students on August 8.

The girls sat on indefinite dharna near administrative building on August 8 night. This prompted the Principal Kumar Surendra to constitute a four-member probe team. It was headed by by Prof Nirmal Kumar. The other members were R P Kumari, Sanjay Choudhary and P C Gupta. The team confirmed the incident on August 8.

It recommended “drastic actions”, including expulsion of six students allegedly involved in outraging the modesty of girls on August 8.

Incidents of eve-teasing and molestation have been going on for the last several years but this is for the first time that the girls decided to go on warpath. They complained that the boys freely roam about near the girls’ hostels, especially after sun-set.

The girls went on to lodge an FIR and also sent a petition to the district magistrate, senior superintendent of police and the principal of MIT.

The team submitted its report to the principal on Monday afternoon.

The report said the dignity of the institute has gone down in the recent past because of misconduct and criminal behaviour of students.

But the boys strongly protested drastic action against six of them and created scene outside the office of the principal. They gheraoed the principal and Prof Nirmal Kumar and sought clemency.

The MIT, which opened on Monday had witnessed turmoil on August 9, when girl students alleged that they were being subjected to harassment on the institute’s campus for the past year. The tormentors, including youths from the boys’ hostels on the campus and outside, pass lewd remarks at them, the girls complained.

To instil confidence among girls the district administration has deployed heavy reinforcement. Even women cops have been deployed. Teaching activities were affected. Neither the girls nor the boys are attending classes. The girls are still apprehensive and fear retaliation from the boys against whom FIR has been lodged.

According to the Senior superintendent of police, Muzaffarpur, Saurav Kumar the six erring students would not be spared. Police has started investigations into the matter.
