Shinde flays Bihar government for rise in Maoists’ violence

Patna,(BiharTimes): The Union government has criticized the Bihar government for what it said its failure to control Maoists insurgency in the state.

In a letter written to the state chief minister Nitish Kumar, the Union home minister Sushil Kumar Shinde said that the situation in Bihar has become alarming and there is complete breakdown in coordination between the state police and Central forces as well as with the neighbouring states like Jharkhand.

He advised the chief minister to examine the successful counter-insurgency models of other states and adopt such structures in Bihar too.

The letter said that the cadres of CPI(Maoist) have looted 38 sophisticated weapons and ammunition from the Bihar Police this year, which the largest number in the country.

“There is a worry that the Maoists have identified Bihar Police for snatching weapons and ammunition since the state police personnel appear to be poorly trained in tactics. The state has also witnessed the killing of 27 security personnel this year, which is a very high number,” Shinde’s letter said.

He urged the Bihar government to revisit its strategy of fighting the Left extremists as the situation has become alarming. If it is not addressed immediately, there is a possibility that the situation may go completely out of control in the near future.

Incidentally, the letter came on the day the opposition members in Bihar Assembly raised the issue of rise of Maoists’ extremism in the state. Only last week 11 policemen were killed in two attacks in Munger and Aurangabad districts.
