Bihar Education Minister regrets poor quality of education in state

Patna,(BiharTimes): After being in power for about eight years a minister in the Nitish Kumar cabinet, regretted that the state was “sitting on volcano” and corrective measures need to be taken to improve the system.

Speaking at a function Education Minister, Prashant Kumar Shahi, said lack of quality education was hindering the progress of millions of school children in the state.

He called for the improvement in quality education for school children and said that they be equipped with linguistic skills to enhance their prospects.

The function was organized to felicitate 120 teachers, who were trained in English teaching under the Bihar Language Initiative in Secondary Schools (BLISS) project.

The Minister said while efforts have been going on to improve the quality of education for the school children there was concern about how the students could be equipped with languages in view of its potential to improve career prospects.

Shahi said the state Education department signed an agreement with the British government’s Department For International Development (DFID) to undertake the English teaching programme for the teachers. Yet the state needs many more English teachers to teach a large number of students in the remote areas of Bihar.

British Council (India) Director, Rob Lynes, while speaking on the occasion, gave emphasis on the knowledge of English language among the teachers and students in Bihar and said that the project was launched to provide English teaching skills to the teachers during in-service training under the BLISS project.
