Arrest warrant issued against SDPO on murder charge

Patna,(BiharTimes): The CJM court in Patna on Friday issued an arrest warrant against Arshad Zaman, who was posted as the sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) of Dehri-on-Sone a fortnight back.

He has been evading arrest in a sensational murder case for the last eight months, yet he got posted in Dehri on June 29. Zaman is on leave and has not joined his duty till now.

But media reports suggest that neither the state DGP nor Rohtas SP has any information about him.
Patna zone IG Sushil Man Singh Khopade said since the matter is related to CID, he has no information. While DGP Abhayanand said he had sought a report from the CID, ADG (CID) A K Upadhyay said the allegation against ten police personnel, including Zaman, in the case of custodial death of a youth was found to be true. The state government has already given prosecution sanction against them.

It was in 2003 that one Amit Singh, son of a police sub-inspector, was picked up by Kotwali police (Patna) in connection with an extortion case (503/03). He was brought to the STF headquarters for interrogation and allegedly subjected to third degree torture resulting in his death in police custody. An FIR was lodged by the deceased's father against ten police personnel, including Zaman, the then DSP, Sachivalaya.

However, sources said that Amit was arrested because he was in love with the daughter of a senior IPS officer.

After the opposition raised the issue in the state Assembly, the matter was handed over to CID. In November, 2012, the state government, on the recommendation of CID, sanctioned for their prosecution.

Zaman was then posted as Darbhanga SDPO. He proceeded on earn leave. In spite of this on June 29, the state government posted him as Dehri SDPO.
