Lalu arrested Advani only after V P Singh asked him to do so

Patna,(BiharTimes): Janata Dal (United) MP Ranjan Prasad Yadav, once a close confidant of Lalu Prasad Yadav, said that RJD chief’s claim that he had got BJP patriarch Lal Krishna Advani arrested on October 23, 1990, at Samastipur is wrong.

Ranjan said that as a chief minister he was bound to arrest Advani after the then Prime Minister, Vishwanath Pratap Singh, instructed him to do so.

Ranjan said that the then Union minister, Sharad Yadav, in consultation with V P Singh had called Lalu and asked him to arrest Advani.

Ranjan claimed that Lalu was worried after getting this directive and came to him to discuss the matter.
However, Ranjan did not explain as to why V P Singh asked only Lalu to arrest Advani when the then JD(U) government was in power in several states, including Uttar Pradesh. Advani had launched his Ram Rath Yatra from Somnath on September 25, 1990 and it was about to conclude in Ayodhya.

Ranjan and Sharad had in the past themselves applauded the then Bihar government for arresting Advani.

It was only after the arrest that the BJP withdrew support from the V P Singh government.
