BJP’s Bagaha bandh evokes mixed response

Patna,(BiharTimes): The Bharatiya Janata Party-sponsored Bagaha bandh in protest against Monday’s police firing on tribals that claimed eight lives evoked mixed response on Wednesday.

While government offices, schools and banks remained open, shopkeepers downed their shutters. There was much less vehicular traffic on the streets.

According to Superintendent of Police Sunil Kumar the shutdown was peaceful and no untoward incident was reported from anywhere.

Former deputy chief minister Sushil Kumar Modi visited Bagaha and met the families of the victims. He also paid a visit to those injured in firing and are now in hospital at Bettiah.

Modi strongly denounced the brutal and unprovoked police firing and demanded that case under Section 302 be filed against policemen responsible for it.

Taking a dig at Chief Minister Nitish Kumar Modi said that he is busy mustering majority in the Assembly and poaching legislators of other parties and has no time for administration.

He alleged that the police fired more than 50 rounds though there was no evidence of violence before the firing. This is the worst incident of police firing under Nitish Kumar government, he added.

He said his party supports the demand of the tribals that families of all the victims should be paid Rs 10 lakh as compensation.

Bettiah BJP MP Sanjay Jaiswal, BJP leader Chandra Mohan Rai and three MLAs, including independent legislator Dilip Verma visited the village with Modi.

Meanwhile, the CPI ML has given Bihar bandh call on Thursday in protest against the police brutality on tribals.
