National Water Policy will have harmful impact on Bihar, state minister

Patna,(BiharTimes): The state government has strongly criticized the National Water Policy and said that it would have a detrimental impact on Bihar.
Speaking in the State Assembly on Friday Water Resources Department Minister Vijay Kumar Choudhary warned about the harmful impact of the Centre’s move to control the water resources of the state through its National Water Law Framework (NWLF) that is under preparation as part of the already adopted National Water Policy (NWP), 2012.

The minister said NWLF would adversely impact the per capita availability of water per year in the state.
He said a grim scenario has been developing in the state, as the availability of surface and underground water had started bordering around the “water scarcity” category. An area is categorized as “water scarcity” zone if its per capita availability of water per year is less than 1,000 cubic metre per person.

He said that though water is the state subject the purpose of NWLF is to vest the Centre with power to control water resources of states.
