Bihar to acquire barren, not agricultural plots, for land bank

Patna,(BiharTimes): The Bihar government has issued orders to all District Magistrates (DM) asking them not to acquire agriculture land under its scheme to create a land bank in every district of the state. Instead they have been asked to acquire barren land for this purpose.

As more than 80 per cent of people in state are dependent on farming and related activities for their livelihood land is very precious for them. Thus the state government is taking full care of the people, an official said.

The state government will now acquire barren or fallow land and government holdings for this purpose. However, land would be acquired only after the approval of landowners and they would be given more than market price as compensation. Apart from this, there is a huge chunk of unused land in the state, which belongs to the state government. The state government has decided to use them in a better manner, the official said.

Land is required for various development schemes, to construct new school buildings, to provide people drinking water, for sewage treatment plants and many other schemes.

The state government is also planning to give some of its land to small and medium industrial units to provide better employment opportunities to the rural population.

Though the state government had a couple of years back decided to set up a land bank of 100 acres in every district for industrial purpose the scheme could not take off.

However, early this year the state government had decided to revive it.
