Chhath provides opportunity to parties to woo Bihari voters in Delhi

Patna,(BiharTimes): As Chhath has provided an opportunity to both the ruling and opposition parties to woo voters of Bihar and eastern UP, Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit and opposition leaders did try to observe the occasion with the people on Friday.

As more than half of the migrant population of Delhi are from Bihar and east UP––the two regions where Chhath has been observed since long––the politicians did try to play their own card.

While the BJP was quick to demand a public holiday on the occasion of Chhath, Dikshit visited various ghats on Friday and said that her government have made all arrangements for the devotees all along river Yamuna.
Delhi BJP CM candidate Dr Harsh Vardhan, in-charge of Delhi elections Nitin Gadkari and state President Vijay Goel observed Chhath Puja at the Yamuna Ghat on Friday.

Goel went to the extent of accusing the Congress government of neglecting Poorvanchalis––people of east UP and Bihar–– and their cultural identity.

He said the BJP would declare Chhath Puja a public holiday, when elected to power. The BJP also set up camps at all 72 ghats in the city for Chhath Puja to provide volunteer service to the people. But the party has given tickets to only four Poorvanchalis.

The Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee President J P Aggarwal also went to various ghats to participate in Chhath Puja.

The Aam Aadmi Party also tried to attract the migrant voters of the East, especially of unauthorized colonies and J J (Jhuggi-Jhopdi) Colonies, both considered as the stronghold of the Congress. But the new party’s efforts is unlikely to make a big dent into this Congress bastion.
