Big jump in diabetic patients in three Bihar districts


Patna,(BiharTimes): About 11.6 per cent of people above the age of 20 are diabetic in at least three districts of Bihar.

The survey was conducted in Patna, Bhagalpur and Nalanda districts.

Speaking at an awareness programme organized by State Health Society (SHS),  Bihar, and  Novo Nordisk Education Foundation (NNEF) at New Gardiner Road Hospital in Patna on Monday Dr Anand Shankar said one out of every second Indian is unaware that he may be a diabetic.

 SHS and NNEF have been observing World  Diabetes

 Day on November 14 for the last three years to mark the birth anniversary of Sir Fredrick Banting, the man who had discovered insulin.

Doctors said the percentage of those suffering from this disease may be much higher all over India.

The New Gardiner Road Hospital campus would be illuminated with “blue light” for five days from November 11. A diabetes walk has also been planned at 8 AM on Thursday, from New Gardiner Road Hospital to Hartali Mor and back to the hospital. People suffering from diabetes and  high blood pressure would be given a free check-up on the occasion.

Their body mass index (BMI) and waist to hip ratio (WHR) would be calculated. Altogether 41 primary centre for diabetes care (PCDCs) are already working across 20 districts of the state.
