Woman, husband from Karnataka arrested in Hawala funding case

Patna,(BiharTimes): Following the arrest of four persons––Gopal Kumar Goyal, Vikash Kumar, Ganesh Kumar and Pawan Prasad––in Lakhisarai on November 7 last a team of district police arrested 37-year old Ayesha Bano and her husband Zubair from their home at Mangalore in Karnataka. She was reportedly in touch with some people in Pakistan, who were in Hawala business.

The Lakhisarai police recovered 20 ATM cards and 35 passbooks from the four arrested persons in the town.

According to the police terror groups are using the hawala route in the state to transfer crores of rupees to fund their activities across the country.

In most of the cases, youths belonging to lower middle class and poor families are being used for fund transfers.

Those working outside the country prefer to send their money through hawala as they did not have easy access to banks.

However, police said that terror groups are now using the hawala transaction to fund their activitites. The actual sender and the receiver can easily conceal their identities.

According to IG (Operations), Amit Kumar, hawala transactions run into crores of rupees in the state. The money has a strong link with the terror activities in the country and is a serious threat to the national economy as well.

Shortage of cash distributors in Bihar facilitates the growth of hawala transaction in the state.
