Situation in Forbesganj normal after last week clashes

Patna,(BiharTimes): The situation in Forbesganj sub-division of Araria district limped back to normal on Wednesday after communal clashes on Friday and Saturday.

The clash took place after Muharram procession of Rampur village in the vicinity of the town turned violent and targeted a few shops. Some youths in inebriated state even entered a place of worship. The situation was brought under control by the quick intervention of the police.

The shop-keepers observed shutdown for two days in protest against Friday’s incident.

The state government rushed Rapid Action Force (RAF) and despatched road construction secretary, Pritya Amrit, as the special district magistrate of Araria.

According to the special DM the situation in Forbesganj is now normal. Thirteen people were arrested and raids are still going on in the town.

Amrit said peace meetings had been held between community leaders and flag marches were being held to instill confidence among people.

Darbhanga zonal inspector general of police G S Gangwar too is camping in Forbesganj.

Superintendent of police Akhtar Husain said seven FIRs have so far been lodged in connection with last week’s violence. He said that steps are underway to serve notices under 107 CrPC to over 5,000 people who, in any way, tried to disrupt peace and indulged in blockade of the roads passing through the town. Besides, police are also conducting raids to apprehend the trouble-makers, he said.

Forbesganj shot into limelight on June 3, 2011 when police opened fire killing four people, including a woman and an infant when the people of nearby Bhajanpur village opposed the construction of a starch factory by the son of BJP MLC, Ashok Agrawal, on what they say public road.
