IIT-Delhi to help decongest traffic on Patna’s Bailey Road

Patna,(BiharTimes): A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed on Thursday between the Foundation for Innovation and Technology Transfer (FITT) of IIT-Delhi and the Bihar State Bridge Development Corporation (BSBDC) for use of high speed traffic models in Patna to decongest the heavy vehicular density in Patna’s Bailey Road.

Later talking to reporters BSBDC chairman Sanjeev Hans said as per the MoU, the Corporation can use Swap-Based Traffic Interchange (SBTI) and Grade Separated U-turn Interchange (GSUI) models developed by IIT-Delhi, which will be used here for the first time in the country.

According to him the two models will be applied at three busy intersections on Bailey Road within a distance of 1.7 km from the Lalit Bhawan to the Patna High Court. Hans said the design models are suitable for a city like Patna where there is acute shortage of land.  The SBTI design will be applied at the intersection near the busy Punaichak. It will ensure free right turn and not require deployment of any traffic police.

Hans said the design was found efficient and was presented to Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.

Speaking on the occasion Dr Anup Chawla, Professor of Mechanical Engineering, IIT-Delhi, who represented FITT, said innovative traffic designs would ensure traffic signal free movement of vehicles along the stretch which is presently choc-a-bloc, particularly in the day time.

He said the Foundation is going for a patent of the models and in future if somebody wants to opt for them, it has to approach the BSBDC.

The traffic density on this stretch of busy Bailey Roadis presently 2,000 passenger car units. Almost all the important government offices and secretariat are situated on or near this part of Bailey Road. Besides, an international museum is also coming up on this road.
