Succession war in RJD

Patna, (BiharTimes):Rahtriya Janata Dal chief Lalu Prasad is perhaps facing worst political crisis of his life after getting convicted in fodder scam  and sentenced to imprisonment for five years consequently lead to his disqualification had to a great extent marginalized his political canvass which he nurtured all these years.

But his problems get further compounded as party is facing the danger of being rudderless in the absence of Lalu who was in perfect supremo role for all these years. As in recent month his party was fast peaking up particularly after massive victory in Maharajgunj parliamentary election and next general election is only months away.  A small section of party workers do think that party should think ahead of Lalu. But everybody knows no leader has charismatic enough to lead the party as well as keep a hold over old social constituency.

In power struggle within the party the most acceptable face is Rabri Devi whom Lalu handed over power in 1997 before going to jail. She could be a compromised leader for everybody and can be in loop more efficiently than anybody else.

“Lalu ji would continue to lead our party. Its only a matter of time and very soon he would get bail from High court “ said party MP, Ram Kripal Yadav and he further added in the meantime Rabri ji would guide us she had done earlier during crisis.

Political observers feel that Lalu doesn’t want to take any risk by handing over power to somebody else other than his family members and a large section of party leaders also believe that social constituency MY (Muslims and Yadavs) trust only Lalu and to some extent his family members. No other any tall leaders can mobilize their support for the party even in the worst time during last elections party managed to get around 20 percent popular votes.

Initially to ward off any confusion regarding leadership Rabri Devi given indication that she could manage party affair along with her sons like Sonia Gandhi. But she retracted very next day perceiving resentment among senior leaders.

Among two sons the younger on cricketer turned Tejashwi is favourite of Lalu who is taking active part in the party affairs and looking after the youth wing. On the other hand the elder  son Tej Pratap is favourit of Rabri Devi and recently her eldest daughter Misa Bharati  had started taking interest in politics recently.

Sources from the party said that senior leaders like Raghuvansh Prasad Singh and Prabhunath Singh who met Lalu in the jail had turned down the idea of projecting Tejaswi as likely successor.

A section within the party feels that some senior leader may desert party in case of imposition of any family member as a successor of Lalu.

Rabri Devi even went ahead asking media persons,” Tell me in which party there is no dynastic rule”
Some party leaders who were consider as possible leader of party includes the names of Raghuvansh Prasad Singh, Jagatanand Singh, Abdul Bari Siddiqui and Prabhunath Singh.

The most acceptable face among second rung leaders Raghuvansh Prasad Singh has discreetly reflected his resentment over new arrangement and left for Delhi as party as a  meeting has been called at Rabri Devi's 10, circular road, Patna, residence on October 6 to decide party’s future course of action.

Now in a changed political situation a section within the party feel that Rabri leadership along with her sons would generate a strong sympathy wave that may revive party’s fortune in coming election but the larger question is how a host of senior experience leader could follow the dictate of Rabri Devi and her son who not even attend the age to contest the election. Lalu’s aura and command is for the test this time how he keeps his party intact in adverse situation and mobilize party workers to work with commitment under his clan which ruled the state for 15 long years.
