Political murders in 2012 were less than the 240 recorded in 2011 and 174 in 2001. The sharp decline is largely due to the fall in such violence in Andhra Pradesh from 39 in 2001 and 33 in 2011 to just two last year.
The state recorded the highest murders over personal vendetta (570) and was next only to much larger and more populated Uttar Pradesh in terms of total murders.
